Equipment

  • Medium Saucepan

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar This is the base of your caramel, providing sweetness.
  • 1 cup Light Corn Syrup This helps create that chewy texture we all love.
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted Butter Adds richness and creaminess to the candy.
  • 1 cup Sweetened Condensed Milk Essential for that velvety smooth finish.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract A must-have for flavor; it elevates the caramel to the next level.
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt Just a pinch to balance the sweetness.

Instructions

  • Step 1: In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, light corn syrup, and unsalted butter. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture comes to a boil.
  • Step 2: Continue to boil without stirring for about 5 minutes, or until the mixture reaches a light golden color.
  • Step 3: Carefully stir in the sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract, and salt. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, for an additional 5 to 10 minutes, or until the mixture reaches a soft ball stage (approximately 240°F on a candy thermometer).
  • Step 4: Remove the saucepan from heat and pour the caramel mixture into a greased 8-inch square baking dish. Let it cool at room temperature for several hours or until completely set.
  • Step 5: Once cooled, cut the caramel into squares and wrap each piece in wax paper or cellophane for storage. Enjoy your homemade chewy caramel candy!
